Just moved to SF for college, and want to skim!

Post by ethanrobert » Mon Sep 08, 2014 12:39 pm

Hey everyone, I just moved up from southern California to attend college at the University of San Francisco. Back at home I would skim in laguna and newport all the time. I brought my board up because I knew there were some spots, but so far I haven't gone out. From what I know, Baker beach and the area around Fort Point can be good. So basically I was wondering if anyone could sort of give me an introduction to the NorCal skim scene? Anything input is great thanks!

Gray Whale Cove has been rolling all weekend and it looks like the south swell is continuing through the week so I would get out there if were you. Try to catch the upcoming tide or the outgoing tide, peak high hasn't been that great there. Montara state beach is another option, however the beach has gotten flattened out recently but things can change day to day out there so it's worth a check. Half moon bay state beach has a lot of slope and would probably be good on a higher tide. I haven't skimmed or seen baker in months so I'll let others comment on that.

Welcome, see ya out there soon.

Alright cool! Thanks for the input! I'll search around a bit, but where generally is Gray Whale Cove? And I was actually at Baker beach a few days ago, but not skimming. The slope was kinda flat, and it was w'y, but i see how it could be good with different conditions. There were also naked people...haha. Because of living on campus and having limited transportation options, baker and the lefts I've seen around fort point are the easiest beaches for me to get to. Unless there are others I'm unaware of.

Yeah the Grey Whale Cove he's talking about is south of Pacifica on the way to Half Moon bay, so you would need a ride to get down there. Fall is when Baker starts to work and is the most consistent though, so keep an eye on that. I'm sure people will be posting on here when it starts to get good. The Fort Point spot is kept more on the down low on here because it can get crowded.

Cool thanks for the info. I actually went surfing at pacifica so I kind of have an idea of where that is. Hopefully I'll get out to some spots within the next week or so. Stoked to start skimming again and see some of you guys out there!

I live a bit south of SF (also grew up in socal) and am getting into skimboarding. I can provide transportation if you want to try to find some places together on the weekend or possibly even during the week some days.

Bumping this thread as I'm in the same boat.

Moving to SF in January, and I'm looking forward to getting back to riding after a 3 year hiatus while living in NYC. Typically what level of wetsuit gear are you guys wearing in January/February?

Thanks!
